IAF cinematheque to review short docs on Czech history

TEHRAN –The Cinematheque of the Iranian Artists Forum (IAF) will screen two short documentaries that revolve around the history of the Czech Republic on Sunday. 

“TGM the Liberator” by Czech film director Vera Chytilova and “Oratorio for Prague” by Czech filmmaker Jan Nemec will go on screen Shahnaz Hall of the forum at 5 pm. 

The screening will be followed by a review session by Iranian critic Hossein Eidizadeh. 

"TGM the Liberator" is a biographical drama that chronicles the life of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, also known as TGM, who was the first president of Czechoslovakia. 

The story centers on his determination and efforts towards establishing a democratic government in Czechoslovakia and fighting for the nation's independence. 

The film showcases his successes, failures, and the personal struggles he faced throughout his life, including the loss of his wife and son. 

Through the depiction of historical events, Chytilova highlights the importance of Masaryk's legacy and his lasting impact on Czechoslovakia. The film was released in 1990 and is praised for its accurate historical portrayal, strong performances, and intricate storytelling.

Released in 1968, "Oratorio for Prague" is a documentary-style film that depicts the events that led up to the Soviet Union's invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, also known as the Prague Spring. 

The film is composed of a series of interviews with everyday people who were involved with the events that transpired in Prague during that time. These interviews are set against a backdrop of footage from the time, capturing the street protests and the brutal military response that followed. 

The film also includes elements of music and poetry, which add to the emotional intensity of the film. 

"Oratorio for Prague" is considered to be a powerful and moving work that captures the spirit of the Czech resistance during the Prague Spring and serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of political conflict. The film has been widely praised for its innovative style and its moving portrayal of the events that unfolded in Czechoslovakia during that time.
